It's strange, the two bitter opposite personalities of the friends I embrace. On one end, there's the super productive, competitive, lively and driven young woman who makes daily decisions and sacrifices to achieve her goals.
Then there's HE, the mellow, introverted, tortured-artist type of guy. The world, in his opinion, has thrown a sucker punch at him and caused him to retreat into the vast labyrinth of his mind.
How do I wind up loving these people??
SHE is the center of attention, He lurks in the shadows and watched the party with bitter contempt. SHE makes herself known, noticed; her own means of establishing herself and creating a circle of supporters, egging her on toward success. HE has a friend here and there, and they spend hours silently watching the stars, reading philosophy. They are intellectuals, yearning for meaning. SHE wants security and achievement.
And in between these two radicals, I twiddle my thumbs and watch them like the anthropologist I wish I could afford to be.
This is a strange party, my opposite friends never taking serious note of the other, regardless of how close WE are.
Both physically and spiritually I'm the medium. I want deep, intellectual understanding, peace and awe at this astounding world. AND I want college, the career, the family, the soccer games.
HE believes those to be the "ultimate loss of ones self and shows an extreme lack of spiritual understanding." SHE believes "the most important thing is to be the best at what you love."
Can one be intellectual AND a businessman(woman)? I like to think so.
I'd hate to be simply one or the other.
Unsuccessful Intellectuality

You could be torn between two lifestyles, but you could still embrace both in my opinion. And just because your friends have differing views on what you should do, doesn't mean you should change your plans for the future. I think her advice at the end was pretty good, "be the best at what you love". Pretty intellectual, that one.
