Since you Look Abnormal, I will Treat you Horrible!

We have all had one in our class before. They normally sit in the back. So quiet and they keep to their selves. Laughter falls upon some of us by the way they walk, talk, look, smell, and their presence is just outstanding. Some of us sadly don’t consider their feelings because: we feel they have none. They are just a canvas of amusement. We push them into this category that describes people who are so abnormal that they could never fit into our utopian reality. We call them: FREAKS.

The first thing the majority of us do is: JUDGEMENT DAY. When our first encounter of them happens, some of us look for what is not normal about them. They look funny. They stand way beyond the outside of the box that they are supposed to be fitted in to. At first, they can fool you and look so normal. But that’s ok. You will pick at them until you find out their hidden identity. Why? Because school is already boring and someone has to entertain you. You have to gain popularity someway. Well here is your chance.

Next comes the fun part: UNRAVELING THE LAYERS. Guess what? They are enrolled in the same class or classes with you! Oh boy. You’ll have plenty of time to get underneath their skin. So you so- called befriend them. If they open the doorway of trust, they will tell you almost anything. They should even be happy that you did make them your friend. But this friendship must be secretive. No one can know about it. They unravel themselves to you layer by layer. Now you know why they act the way they do, if it is a serious condition or not, and how they feel about it, you are ready to spill the juice on them. You can’t wait for everybody to soak up your gossip with a mop.

Now comes the popularity when you: BECOME THE VOICE OF YOUR PEERS. You have all the dirt you need to squash them like a bug. Now it is time to tell all. But you can’t say anything now. You have to wait until you get an audience surrounding you. That way those people that were there for the show can tell others about it. Now you have your peers around you and here we go.First you start whispering about the “idiot” sitting in the back of the class. Then you write a note to pass around. For the encore, you start yelling outloud the insecurities that the “freak” possesses. Almost everyone is laughing and snickering. You have just gained popularity.

Last but not least is : PHYSICALLY MESSING WITH THE FREAK .Now you are popular. Some people still want a good laugh. Some people persuade you to put the freak in the locker. Put their head in the toilet. Make them do your work. Talk about them for the majority of the class period. The gestures never end. You could keep doing this until you gradute.

But what you don’t realize is : REALITY CHECK. You wonder why these kids get upset by your actions. Its only a joke to you. But to them it is a memory that is unerasable. While you make fun of their conditioin or disease, you never thought that you could end up in the same shoes as them. While you torment them, you never thought they would bring a gun to school and actually attempt to kill you and others. You never thought. That’s the problem.

Just because you have sclerosis, tendency to love education, smell because you are so homeless that you have no where to bathe, have cancer that makes your hair fall out or eats away at your skin, does not mean you deserve to be treated inhumane. The people who laugh behind your back fail to realize that just because they are physically “perfect” doesn’t mean they mentally are. If they take all their time trying to pick on you, there is something seriously wrong with them. So the next time you see a kid in your class that is unlike your other peers , consider this : that weird kid could be you in a day, month, years or a decade. Treat people the way you want to be treated.

Thanks for your insight. I just wish people that do make fun of others would realize that they are only making a fool of theirselves.

Bullies are such sad, sad creatures...

This reminds me of a blog I wrote last year...I think it was called "How to be a complete waste to society". Your entry was funnier, and the message was right. No one deserves to be picked on because they are a "freak" and certainly anyone could possibly become a "freak" themselves.

Thank you. I used to have a friend that had that kind of cancer that eats away at the skin, and some people would make fun of her because her face looked a little smushed in and she wore wigs all the time. I told everybody that did make fun of her, that they need to grow up.I am just glad my parents raised me the right way which is to treat everyone the way you want to be treated.

Thanks for helping others to realize how harmful their words and actions can be. I was looking up music videos on YouTube a few weeks ago, and stumbled across some "Victims of Suicide" memorials. Many of the kids in the videos were victims of bullying. The sad part was that they were all very beautiful people- if I saw them in public, I might be jealous of their looks. I couldn't imagine how people could be so mean to drive them to feeling as if they had nothing to live for. It was so sad. I think teens forget to realize how much their words are affecting the person. It's terrible that someone is so insecure themselves that they have to put down others to feel confident.

Thank you. No one deserves to be made fun of. I don't care if its a joke. Sometimes a joke can turn into reality.

I felt so bad for these kids in school. I never made fun of them because I used to be one of them. People would sit there and make fun of them because they had issues with their own self image. I hated that. I stuck up for a kid before and I was the next target. It was so stupid.

I liked this blog alot and the way you worded it was very good. Thanks alot for this blog!
