Music is an art form that has been greatly discussed throughout the history of time.
from the days of socrates and plato, who believed that particular people should only listen to certain music. the question has always been does music affect individual psychology.
this answer is virtually an unknowable, due to the multiple processes that can affect individual personality.
however, it does bring up a heavy idea, music affects the individual.
In America, Music has represented the movement of black peole into mainstream America, and until about 1996 it had been a music of strength and survival. the problem with music now is it reflects reality ver batum: if you were a drug dealer, pimp or murderer, the idea is to make a song about that, when the song should really be about why it was necessary for you to drug deal etc.: the result of poor housing and job communities.
Personally i do believe music affects psychology, its basic conditioning, anything said over and over again, pumped into your brain will affect how you think. to say it will affect how one acts, i think is totally different, because action depends on the individual and their character, are they strong or weak?
The agenda of music, particularly black music has changed from the slave hyms, Jazz and funk, to modern rap. Rap not hip hop. Hip hop was battling the same problems of oppression that jazz and slavery hyms did, however, with the introduction of the gangsta in the 90's led to an admiration for the gangsta, which America has had an affinity for since Scarface, Godfather, Good fellas and countless other films and t.v shows that put the gangsta as the star.
Rap is similar to the Minstrel shows[derrogatory stereotyping of blacks in t.v] of the 20th century.
again it comes down to responsibility, these individuals, coming from nothing to something, this is the American dream, however, to say this individual does not have to maintain a value system is simply wrong. People must be aware if you are saying something there is the chance that what your saying may motivate more people to do what your saying. If the rose did grow from concrete, we would be amazed at the resiliance of the plant to grow, however if that rose was poisonous, we would have to strike down the plant, for the Safety of the community.
remember that
so my brothas and sistas
examine what you are putting into your head
and examine what your attitudes are in situations.
diversify your musical library.
peace
