Right Wing Pushes Santorum's Untrue WMD Claim

I usually go to Google News to check out what's going on. It's among my stops around the internet that include the normal Democratic/Progressive blogs.

I found a headline that said, "Oh Where, Oh Where is the WMD Coverage?" I thought it was going to be a piece with a sarcastic title. After all, even the intelligence agencies themselves said these weren't examples of WMDs. And if they were WMDs, they weren't produced in the past 15 years.

But it wasn't. Instead it was a piece that bent and mangled the facts mercilessly. It was written by one Bobby Eberle who, "writes for The Loft and GOPUSA." I decided to check out just who this guy is.

His official bio says he's a career GOP man. He runs the website GOPUSA. That gives a little insight into his bias (we all have our biases). You can read more about his background at the DKosopedia in an entry that has little room for bias, as it is mostly a reprint of a interview about his background.

Then I came across this, a connection between Eberle and Jeff Gannon. Remember Jeff Gannon? He was the male prostitute who worked as a 'reporter' for Talon News. So let's take a look at Talon News' connection to Eberle and GOPUSA.

The IP addresses for TalonNews.com and GOPUSA.com differ by only one digit. The IP address for TalonNews is 65.17.231.174. The IP address for GOPUSA is 65.17.231.173. The two addresses exist in the same CIDR block and the servers are quite possibly located on the same computer. The owner of the CIDR block is Bobby Eberle, owner of GOPUSA. Further investigation on netcraft.com reveals that Eberle owns both sites or at least did through 2003. In an archived version of TalonNews, Eberle is listed as Editor in Chief through 2003. This is the same Bobby Eberle listed as the proprietor of GOPUSA.com.

OK, now you have the background on the guy, here's what he had to say about Santorum and Hoekstra's WMDs.

It’s quite interesting and disappointing to see how this news has been bypassed by almost all of the major media outlets.

Well maybe because these were not, as I noted yesterday, the WMDs we were told Sadaam was making in the lead up to the War in Iraq.

Last night, intelligence officials reaffirmed that the shells were old and were not the suspected weapons of mass destruction sought in Iraq after the 2003 invasion.

If we are to take this editorial seriously, Eberle honestly believes that Bush, the White House and the military would keep this secret since we began finding these 20-year-old "WMDs" three years ago.

And people wonder why we say you can't believe anything that comes out of the right-wingosphere.

Actually, I picked up your story in Google News. It's amusing to track Jim Guckert references. Perhaps the most embarassing Bushevik of them all.

With regards to this story, I think it mostly proves the desperation of stupidity--but Santorum has nice hair. Nothing under it, however. Cheney and Rumsfeld are ignoring this old stuff because it's too embarassing--practically stamped "Made in USA". However Saddam was our friend at that time, and anything he wanted to do to those nasty old Iranians was cool with us.

I think the main attack in this election will actually be an attempt to pretend that BushCo cares about national security. Of course, the reality is that they regard it as a no-lose issue. If there is a terror attack, they'll just blame it on the Democrats when the reality is the Democrats are in no position to be responsible for anything. That's Rove's version of "an inconvenient truth".
