My community college is holding meetings to address whether or not to arm the security guards with guns. I personally think this is a horrible idea. I understand that they are concerned because of the increase in school shootings but honestly how much is it going to do. The way i see it is that if someone is coming on campus with a gun with the intention of killing students, an officer with a gun is not going to do a thing. We only have four officers, and only two of them will be in actual class buildings. If anything were to happen there's a very slim chance that that officer will be in that building..also the fact that im on campus all day and i hardly ever see an officer walking around. I also feel that because my college is centered around a rough area the chances of students bringing guns because they know officers have guns is more likely. I just don't see how having them armed will change the minds of a person intending to kill others...especially since most of the known shooting incidents the shooter then commits suicide so the fear of have an campus security guard hold aim a gun at them is not really going to deter them.

Arm them. Just because you only have four doesn't make it bad. Would you rather have a guard show up within minutes or wait 5 to 10 for the cops? Obviously banning guns on campus doesn't work, but if we're gonna stay stupid, we at least need the guards to be armed. If an armed guard at VTech was there, we wouldn't be talking about all those dead students, we'd only be talking about a few. A gun at someone won't deter them, but killing them will deter more deaths at their hands.

my concern is for the amount of time it would take for an officer to actually get to the scene of a shooting. running from one side of the campus to the other is a long time. plus that we do have a jail placed right next to the campus of something were to happen. i can see you side as well though. thanks : )
