I've always heard how suicide is bad. It's a selfish act that punishes not only the person who decides to take their own life, but also their relatives, friends, and loved ones. But isn't it selfish for the loved ones to only be thinking of themselves when they say "Don't kill yourself because I love you and need you"?.
Another thought- I have been recently studying Confucianism. One of their key teachings is how important relationships are. For example, sibling to sibling, child to parent, husband to wife. People who follow these traditions are expected to give great respect to each of these relationships. But if for some reason if they can not, if a person's brother and spouse don't get along and fight over them, it is believe that the best course of action is to stop this feud by suicide. It is greatly respected and praised. Since they were the problem, the best way to solve the fight is for the person to take his or herself out of the situation. In this case, suicide is praised.
I am not advocating suicide. If a person is considering suicide they need a lot of help from professionals. But isn't contemplating suicide normal for most teens? Most of them don't go through with it, but should we look down on them for thinking it could be a solution to a problem? Should take the common American view that suicide is selfish or the Confucian belief that it can in fact be selfless and a solution to a problem?
Suicide is Bad, But Why?

Suicide does not help anyone. A fued cannot be stopped by suicide. They would probably just blame each other. Suicide is the most selfish act. First, people who think about suicide think about how terrible things are for them. That thier life is so much worse than everyone else's (of course, not everyone thinks this way). And to actually go through with suicide is to not think of the effect it will have on others. I am sure that suicide has crossed every teenagers mind at one point or another, but most do not think on seriously. So I suppose it is normal to think about it.
And just so you know, I agree with VERY little of the Confucian beliefs.
It is really the one who is killing themself's choice. They can't help it if they want to die, its something that has happened to them, or depression, that makes them that way. Asking why someone would commit suicide, and then scorning them for attempting it would be like asking someone with parkingson's disease why they have it, and then yelling at them when their hands shake. They are treated like criminals, locked away and forced to give up their soul to the public, but they are just people like everyone else. If anything, treating them that way will make them do it again. Some people's lives are worse than others, nobody can really understand how someone else feels inside unless they are that person. It is really selfish to think about yourself when someone commits suicide. Blaming them for leaving you,... you wouldn't say that about someone who died of natural causes.
My Niece who is living with us lost her sometimes boyfriend. He got up from the couch at his brother's, walked into the kitchen and shot himself in the head. His brother's 2 year old was the first into the kitchen to see the mess he made of himself.
Since then his brother's family has been evicted from their apartment simply because the idiot committed suicide there. While they were out of the apartment for 2 days waiting to have it professionally cleaned someone broke in and stole a bunch of their stuff.
My niece is a complete wreck at 19 years old. I doubt she will ever see the world the same way again. She will need a lot of counseling to get over the guilt stemming from the idea that she might have somehow played a part in his decision, nothing that a 19 year old should ever have to deal with.
We're put here for a reason and part of that journey is to take life as it comes & battle through the tough times that life throws at us. Bailing out on the whole thing is not just selfish but it is also the weakest, most cowardly, pussy-assed thing a person could ever do.
Suicide is a selfish act for both parties as you said. However, it is also a cowardly act in the way that the person would not take on life's plights, fight and strive for the best. Yet they were able to face death which could be somewhat considered courageous? I have a similar post, come by! =)
What if the suicidal person has illness that will affect their children and knows that they will not be able to take care of them properly, or that they will have a negative impact and they're circumstances are horrible, it will just create another generation of pain. If the person has considered everything and wants to be relieved of their pain, is it our right to stop it?
Hm...

If you think that suicide, in any non-extreme situation can be a logical solution, you are a fool. Did you know some of the great ancient societies thought it was a good idea to have young boys partnered with men who would have sex with them. It was believed to be a right of passage or some crap like that. Just becaused it seemed like a good thing for some great society, doesn't mean it was.
There are few good reasons in this day and age, in this society, to kill yourself.
I'm not saying that its not normal or okay to have thoughts of suicide at one time or another in your life. I'm not saying that kids should be looked down upon or treated like they are crazy for being depressed. Hell, I don't think most of them should even be on meds. I'm pretty sure I'm depressed myself, but I take it as part of life. (not saying i'm better than anyone, just that its normal to be depressed.)
but still, if you want to kill yourself, you should at least
suicide is something that is not and should not be something that is normal for teenagers to deal with thinking about. I've gone there and believe me I wish I woudlve gotten help for my way of thinking sooner than i did... it most certainly is not something to be praised or looked as acceptable in any way.
It is also a disrespect to God. and absolutely not a way of solving things.
Its a way of avoiding your problems.
Once someone decides that they are going to kill themselves, they are no longer thinking logically.
They don't realize that what they are doing is going to harm others. They are in such a state of deep depression that they can think of nothing but how much better off the world would be without them.
It's hard to stop people once they get to that point. You hear stories about those that are "saved" from their suicide because a friend or family member calls at the exact right moment. This isn't because they all of a sudden realize that someone does love them. They've known it all along. This call wakes them up from the trance they are in once they decide to kill themselves. Yes, it makes them realize that life is worth living, but they had to know that all along in order for it to be valid in their minds.

With locations to do it cleanly, safely, and definitely. They could locate the suicide hotline councilors at that place, and do whatever intervention they can with out violating the persons right to the decision.
Most suicides attempt it first as an attention ploy. There is a subset of the successful suicides that just succeed accidentally.
Those in chronic pain due to terminal illness should have the right. Dr. Kevorkian may one day be seen as a hero. Probably that will happen within 20 to 30 years as the baby boomers become infirm.
I'm not sure how I feel about it....
I think I have this human fear of death so ingrained in my that I can't bear to think that I could choose to live or die... so I can't imagine it from anyone else's perspective.
However, I do feel a knawing guilt for the fact that we force people to live when they are in such terrible pain. We give dogs and cats the luxury of euthenasia when they are faced with unbearable (and incurable) pain... why not people?
I guess I'm on the fence. I guess.
