Kentucky state colleges will be effected by the state budget deficit. To make up for the huge deficit, the new governer asked all stated funded schools to pay back 3% of their state funding. This could raise tuition by more than 12% by 2008.
Due to the budget cuts, WKU cut the Men's Soccer program to make up the 3% they have to pay back the state. It was also reported that even more cuts budget cuts will be made and more programs or faculty will be cut. There could also be a 20% increase in tuition in the next five years.
Starting in 2008- 2009, each year there will be a 6% increase in tuition. Currently tuition is 3,208 a semester. The next increase, based on 3,208 times 6%, will raise tuition to 3400. The next year it will raise up to 3604 a semester. This means that tuition raises $200 a semester or $400 a year. If tuition were to shoot up to 20%, the tuition will increase by $1000 a year.
By Mid-March the results should be in and more information will be revealed on the tuition increase.

Another unfortunate side effect of financial stress in higher education, is that states begin accepting more out of state applicants (see WV...)
They really need to get a handle on this situation before it spirals so out of hand that education beyond high school goes back to be ing a game of the affluent.

"Jesus take the wheeeeel!"
"I'm not sure she really understands how it works..."
I have been looking into graduate schools everywhere, including England. The prices are so high that I fear even though I need to finish my education, I'm not going to be able to.
Then, I start thinking about what the world will be like full of uneducated people because it can't be afforded. What then? Interesting concept, but I'll be happy that I'm not alive for that.
