Political Ads Not So Political

No Britney isn’t running for President with Paris as her Vice-President running mate, but there is a new political commercial featuring the two. Senator and Republican presidential nominee John McCain has produced a new ad that compares Senator and Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama to the likes of Britney and Paris.
He is trying to make Senator Obama appear as a celebrity. What I don’t understand is why you would do that. Being a celebrity means that you are in the public eye and media, with this said John McCain himself is a celebrity. I don’t know why you would compare your political opponent to a celebrity, when you yourself are one.

Later on in the ad McCain makes the statement that Obama does not have enough experience to run a country, something that sounds like your typical campaign ad. This statement is something that I can respect, but saying that your opponent, a Senator, is like Paris Hilton a no talent floozy who has never had to work, well that’s low. Obviously, if he is a Senator, he has worked very hard and is highly respected, and for McCain to try and say otherwise is wrong.

It you want to make a political ad attacking your opponent go ahead, that’s part of the game. But it goes to far when you attack for something that has no political merit. Maybe Obama is more of a celebrity, maybe McCain thought that by comparing Obama to card caring members to the tabloid club that middle age voters would vote for him, I don’t know. What I do know is that it is a cheap shot and was poorly executed at best, and believe that it is going to backfire on McCain.
