Poverty and McDonald's (cring)

Too many animals get slaughtered every day!!! I don't think that it's necessarily wrong to eat meat, but so many innocent animals are getting murdered for no rightful cause. I'm saying this because a lot of the meat is wasted! What's the point when you can get the same nutrients in beans, potatoes, and rice? One field of potatos could feed the entire United States. Why not make one of these fields of cows or meat and turn it into a field potatoes, or beans and feed it to the third world countries and the poor people who need and deserve it the most? We're supposedly trying to help them now, so why not go the whole nine yards? It's not like we'd be starving ourselves. I'm not saying don't eat meat (I personally don't, I think it taste nasty), or don't eat any dairy (I love dairy I couldn't live without it and I know some people could say that about meat), I'm saying, priortize your daily meals.
On top of that, WHY THE HECK DO PEOPLE CONTINUE TO GO TO MCDONALD'S???? Holy cow are they stupid? I hope they haven't seen Supersize Me, cuz if they did, they're just plain dumb for going, and if not they should still know that that crap is bad. Seriously now, that crap is disgusting. Not only does it taste inedible but one meal has soo much fat to feed the entire nation (over-exaggerating but not by much!) and more than the amount of calories you want to take in ONE day. And people complain about their weight! Geez. Stop complaining and do something about it! Stop eating microwaved fatty fast foods and actually eat something that's going to do good for your body, and exercise. That's a very common word, but the action does not happen enough in my opinion. People need to start taking care of their bodies. Why do they think people get soo sick with Diabetes, heart attacks, arthritis in the lower half of the body and the list goes on and on?!

I think we have sharp teeth for a reason. I also think Mcdonalds and other fast food places help feed people that need to be fed. Not good or bad. I believe there are bigger issues, like what might happen if Mcdonalds and Starbucks become McBucks.

That's why there is a Subway. Yes Mcdonald's feeds a lot of people. But is it really good. I don't think so. But hey, if you want to get fat and die of some disease, at least I know I warned you. There are more healthier choices out there that's for sure!
Oh gosh McBucks sounds disgusting. Mcdonald's is making coffee now......And our teeth really aren't that sharp, if you compare it to the true meat eaters (cats and wolves etc...). Our teeth were not made to tear meat. At least we have the four canine's otherwise people's jaws would really be messed.

Our teeth were made to tear meat. The incisors were made to tear meat and the molars are made to chew/ grind the meat. Over time our bodies change and I'm sure our teeth used to be a lot sharper.

One field of potatos could feed the entire United States.

Can you please support this statement with a legitimate source?

Also, if you have not noticed, McDonalds no longer offers Supersized meals and people are inherently omnivores (our bodies are designed to consume both meat and legumes).

I didn't say meat was bad for you...you big silly....
And unfortunately the article is at home (I'm at school right now) but when I do get home I will definitely be more than happy to provide it to you.
But McBucks-definitely an issue. GROSS, is what I've got to say about that.

I was at work about a month ago and my co-worker had bought Mcdonald fries for us. Now I was already dead set against Mcdonald's but I decided to try one anyway. And OMG girl-they were soggy, and tasted like they were a week old. Disgusting. That's when I vowed to NEVER ever, not even one single fry would I eat McDonald's, any fast food. I will give Burger King credit for making good tasting fries, but they are jsut as bad for you.....I won't eat there either.

Supply and demand.

As long as people are willing to pay their hard-earned dollar for fast food, McDonalds will stay in business. Welcome to the land of capitalism.

I look forward to your reference to that article; common sense says it's not going to be legitimate. You cannot feed an entire country on one field of potatoes and to claim this is true or believe this is true is totally facetious.

AliciaB's picture

Have you ever planted a potatoe? Do you realize how big these fields are? They are HUGE. I used to have a potato plant at my great grandma's house and we would get more than 5 potatoes. Plus potatoes don't take up much room at all. they are smaill. I don't know if in the article they said the whole united states, but I do know they stated a decent sized country.
And as far as people willing to spend their hard earned dollar on a burger and fries-that's exactly why I call those people dummies....Not very smart at all if you ask me!
If you're a believer in God, then eating this way all time is a sin. It destroys your body and God said take care of the body he has provided you.
Even if you're not a believer in God, you should still take care of your body. That's like telling a disease that 'it's okay if you inhabit my body. ' This then sends people to the hospital (which these expenses are being taken out of MY hard earned dollar, and Idon't want to pay for someone who knows better but made the stupid choice anyway)for whatever disease their obesity has caused.

Reference please?

Your rambling does not prove any point.

Thanks to the documentary "Super Size Me," I hope you guys watch that, but I hope you do not either. It is so gross, you will never want to eat there ever again.

Yes, because watching a completely biased documentary is really going to assist in your real-life decision making abilities and help you develop critical-thinking skills.

"Ewwww did you see that video where they slaughtered the cow? Pooooor things omg I'll NEVER eat meat again."

Well it obviously made some impact since supersizes are illegal now.

Yes, the government made it illegal for McDonalds to sell a Supersized meal because of a Michael Moore film.

Can you show me this law? I am really interested to see it.

Uh no their not. McDonalds stopped selling them because of how unhealthy it was and because of the movie. Don't make wild assumptions just because something is gone.

Shush, sod... you ruined my fun. I wanted to make this person wade through federal law to find the "Supersize America - I Don't Think So" law enacted in 2005.

*snicker*

Bwahaha.

Maybe they won't notice my comment and they continue wading?

I know I researched it. You are correct. I was wrong. That was just something that I had heard.

Yes, often times animals are treated cruely when raised to be slaughtered but you cannot say that eating animals is cruel. It's part of our survival and a part of the food chain and I, personally, feel no remorse when eating meat.

Also, relying on just one type of crop to feed an entire country is not a smart idea. Don't put all your eggs in one basket. Proof behind this is Ireland and the potato famine. If you over plant one crop in a certain area, the nutrients from the soil will diminish and you will no longer be able to plant in that area, which is why farmers rotate their crops. Also, if something happens to that crop, then we're basically screwed.

I agree that if you choose to eat unhealthy foods then you must be able to deal with the consequences.

Another thing, I'm not sure how this whole thing has to do with poverty. I think you're mostly talking about how we could avoid eating meat and how we could feed nations off of easily planted crops. If you wanted to speak about the correlation between Macdo (I'm a bit French) and Poverty, then yes, that would be a good blog.

I never said it was wrong to eat meat. If you do I don't care. I'm just saying that a lot of it is a waste. and Yeah I do agree people treat these animals very cruel. I actually have a cd with a clip of a real slaughter house. It's quit sad really-and when we bought the cd we didn't know it was on there-but that's beside the point. I think that there is a more sane way to slaughter these animals. A people that kill these animals obviously don't care about them because often times, these cows or what not has its limbs cut off first, while still alive and then hung up side down suffering. That is wrong to me! That is one of the cruelist punishments you could give to an animal or even a human being. This is part of the reason why i don't eat meat. It makes me literally want to throw up everytime I see meat, because it makes me think of how it got there.

halfnhalfgyrl's picture

I had a discussion my freshman year of high school with my english teacher about how they slaughter cows. He told us a bit of the process and said that he thinks everybody who eats meat should visit a slaughter house. He said if you can't stomach how they kill the animals then you shouldn't eat the meat. I understand that since you've seen that process you are now turned off by meat.

I'm glad that you can somewhat see the way I feel. It just grosses me out. And honestly I never really liked meat before I became a vegetarian. I just ate it because that's what my mom/grandparents fed me. But now that I'm old enough to distinguish between what I like and what my parents like for me, I made the choice, actually not that long ago, at the end of summer, to never touch meat again (eat it anyway).

My boyfriend's father owns a slaughterhouse. I've seen them kill the animals. It's very humane. I still eat meat. If you have not personally toured a slaughterhouse and/or seen the death of the animal, don't go knocking it because of some PETA video.

halfnhalfgyrl's picture

I agree with you. Out of the many slaughterhouses in the US, I'm going to assume the greater part of them do NOT treat animals like the way they are portrayed too. There is always the small exception that ruins it for the rest.

Do you know what happened with the meat recall....it was like 143 lbs of beef or something. I did not get a chance to watch it on the news. What was that all about?

son_of_disaster's picture
Member of the Progressive U Alumni Association

It was 143 million pounds. There were some videos from the slaughterhouses of them abusing sick animals and putting them in the food supply, but they don't expect anything from it.

engkatiemarie's picture
Volunteer for the Progressive U Alumni Association

The recall was because they were putting "non-ambulatory" animals into the food system. This is against health code because the animals cannot stand on their own, and require the care of a veterinarian. The farmers involved in the recall did not utilize veterinarians for these animals, and therefore were definitely guilty of abuse and breaking the law. Meat that comes from these animals is more likely to be contaminated with disease like e. Coli and mad cow.

Farms like these are called, "feedlot farms." They are in it for the money, have large numbers of animals, and don't care for their animals very well. If you are concerned about the quality of your food, you should look into sustainable farms in your area. These farms are small, local farms that sell local, and use local resources to support their animals. You can even visit the farm, and the packaging plant where your meat is process. People who are legitimate will be thrilled to show you their business. In this way, you will know everything that goes into your food.

That's awful, I cannot believe they did that! It is amazing how far someone will go for money. I actually have already visited the Wright Dairy Farm near me, although they do not process meat they do make ice cream, cream, popcicles, and such. But that is a good idea.
