I am not sure if anyone has heard but the President of the lovely country, currently known as the United States of America ( the country I do call home, though not as proudly nowadays) has agreed to let in 7,000 Iraqi refugees. They will be brought to the US, given asylum and will feed off of our Social Security, along with the illegal Mexican immigrants who have also been given the money that they did not pay into either.
What is wrong with this picture? Isn't there anywhere else that will take them? America is so paranoid because of the rise in Islam (in America) over the past decade and they are going to let 7,000 new Muslims into the country...that makes a whole lot of sense. There is another rise for you.
Okay, so I am going to pretend for a second that I am in the president's shoes (talk about pretending), I don't want the country to be taken over by a certain religious group, so I am going to let in thousands of people who are from a country where the certain religion thrives...sure.
Just imagine it: soon, our money will bear pictures of Saddam Hussein and Mohammamed, say "In Allah We Trust" and the country's name will be changed to "The United States of Islam." Our pledge of Allegience would say what? "I pledge allegience to the Qu'ran of the United States of Islam and to the slavery into which everyone was forced; one religion, under Allah, this sectarian nation, with five daily prayers for all."

I am surprised... maybe it's because I spent the last four years in New Mexico (which is, incidentally, part of the US, you don't need a passport to go there, and I don't speak Spanish... much...), but I always got the impression that most people today are ready to aggressively defend (wait, was that an oxymoron? I'm not sure) any and every person who wants to get into the nation, legally or otherwise. I'm pleasantly surprised that sentiments on this blog seem, at least thus far, to be otherwise.
I think Teddy Roosevelt had some wonderful insights into Immigration. Yes, America does still call to the world, give me your tired, huddled masses, but we can only be America if everyone who comes becomes American. If people refuse to give up their hyphens (Italian-Americans, French-americans (do we even have those any more?), Irish-Americans, African-Americans, Asian-Americans) then we can't expect our country to work. While it is essential to have a sense of where you are from, it is just as essential to committ to the common good of the place you currently call home.
There's a key part of "the great melting pot" that most people overlook. Assimilation... it's not always a bad thing.
I do think it's pretty rummy that the President would allow this at this time.
I am surprised that you can say that you live in the US and can say "won't anyone else take them" in reference to the Iraqi refugees. This is not a country where everyone HAS to be American. This is a country where you can be whatever you want and still have a community of different people united in the idea of freedom. We are a country founded on 'refugees' on immigrants, how can we even begin to turn people away?
I also can't say that your depiction of Islam is well-founded. Do you have any background in placing such a claim? And what would it matter anyway if our money or motto said 'in allah we trust'- isn't it just another name for god? Not to mention the fact that the 'in god we trust' addition was made during the red scare to give the idea that the US has some sort of moral high ground over communists.
I am surprised by the president's action on this given his past actions and words. However, I will say that I think it is great that we would extend such a invitation to a country where our bungled actions have not assisted much except the beginning of civil war.

Why should "anyone else" have to take the Iraqi refugees? They wouldn't be refugees if it weren't for America in the first place.I find it amazing that people can be so dead set against those from another religion as to feel threatened when we do what is right and give those who's lives WE have helped destroy a place and the chance to rebuild. They aren't going to turn the United States into the United States of Islam... I wouldn't be surprised to learn that many of those 7,000 actually prefer life in the US as is to the life they have been forced to live in Iraq for the last several years.

We are at war with Islam now? This is officially Christianity v. Islam round God only knows which? I guess it is time to start filing crosses into my extensive ammo collection and accelerating my tattoo project. See, I am having some of my favorite Bible passages permantly inked into my holy, God fearing flesh. Most of them are Old Testament and Revelations.
It is time to show this filthy towelhead scum how real warriors of God get down. Fuck these refugees. If you ain't wearing a cross you are the enemy my friend, and enemies get blessed bullets lodged in the bowels the hard way. Don't worry though, we poured holy water and prayed on 'em first so you can leave this world baptised and have a chance at salvation.
We will open the seals of the seven scrolls and unleash a clensing nuclear wind over the heathen lands. Anybody with enough skin and muscle left to pull a trigger gets strung through the heels and dragged through the desert behind out tanks for forty days. The fetid wind will carry the screams of the heathen to their brthren and they will truly come to know that God is great, and Jesus his son.
God is great.

Ever thought that by exposing people to Muslims, it could change they way they are viewed. Not all muslims are terrorists....in fact most are not. There are over 1.7 billion Muslims in the world and it is sad that these few people give the rest of Muslims a bad name.
Jesus would welcome everyone with open arms. I thought that was the whole point of Christianity -- to imitate Jesus.
But if you're not even Christian, I can see why we need more people like you in this country.

*~That's because they are refugees, they can't, when we went to Iraq we also destroyed many homes. And you can't even compare the Iraqi's coming here with the issue of illegal immigration because the government is sponsering it, of the Iraqi's will be here leagally. Also....
*~"Today, U.S. officials announced that the U.S. plans to resettle some 7,000 Iraqis this year and will give the U.N.'s refugee agency more money to aid those who have fled to neighboring states. The United States took in only 202 Iraqi refugees last year." http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=7407260&ft=1&f=1001

What in the world are you talking about? I seriously hope this is some kind of joke. First of all "Allah" is just Arabic for the word "God". Second, slavery? What are you talking about, if you'd bother to read on the actual religon you'd see that "Even if misguided Muslims were to try to `force' Islam somehow on others, it would not be accepted by the Creator." http://islamicweb.com
I think you my friend have a case of something called "American exceptionalism"

Hi,
1. USA is built on Immigration. The person who wrote the article above is probably an immigrant or a descendant of one. Thus he/she is a hypocrite if he/she is refusing other immigrants.
2. These 7000 refugees, along with millions more lives, our country, due to its foreign policy, are destroying. Thus, these refugees are our obligation. If we broke it...we should fix it.
3. I can see Islamophobia, very apparent, in the above article. Thus, I will, FREE OF CHARGE, send him/her or anyone else, a copy of the translation of the Quran, the Muslim scripture, revealed by God, to Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).

Since when did the word "America" translate into the name of a religion? If you ask me, the majority of this country is Christain, however, there are buddhists, muslims, athiests, Jews, Wiccans, etc. that live in this country as well. Immigration has been a problem with many cultures, not just from Mexico. You forgot about all the Cuban and Haitian immigrants who fled to this country and denied entry. But you're scared because middle easter people (who are not necessarily ALL muslim to be exact) come to this country? BTW, I'm sure we're not the only country who recieve immigrants.
