I don't think we need welfare program at all. It was created during depression era, so I understand the needs at the time. But now we are not in depression and welfare is only creating problems and not helping anything in our society.
Only thing it does in this country is creating welfare generation, who does not work and get welfare checks from the govenment to live. Now, forth generation of welfare family is starting to appear. For three generations, they did not work, and just get money from the government, and those money are from us, tax payers. For more than 50 years, our parents and grand parents paid those people who don't even try to get a job and live off with welfare checks.
There was a law passed few years ago to prevent this from happening, so welfare check was sent to the family for only two years after that family lost their job, and couldn't live by themselves. And I heard that is working fine. People who were relied on welfare checks started working again and unemploied rate went down a little.
But still, there are people who live off from welfare only, and we still have problem with these people. Unemployed people get money from the company or businesses who fire them every month until they get a job. So, people who worked in many different job, and fired many times, they get enough money to live without working ever again. It's like social security for welfare people.
What I really don't understand is, in this country, there are lots of jobs available to people. We have a problem about illegal immigrants taking our durty jobs and low wage jobs. Why can't we put those welfare people in that position? people who receives welfare gets their money because they don't have a job to make money. And there they are! Job for everyone. It may be lower than average wage, but these is a job! you don't have to get welfare check to live now!
I really don't understand. Every year, job openings are much MUCH higher than our unemployment rate. And there are still some people without a job. Of course where you live matters and some people couldn't move to other place to get a job, but othre than that, everyone should have a job.

consider this college student, 1 kid, no family. Who could help her. She needs help college is higher than ever. Should she not complete school? What to do? The Welfare system would do more for her than she could do for herself with the situation that she is in. They pay for Daycare, housing , and her SOME of her school bills.
ths is not called welfare but financial aid. Welfare is for low income or no income FAMILIES and for her case, easily can get a financial aid from both state and federal government
But what if she had to drop out? Then she would still need money.
The solution to the welfare crisis in this country is not getting rid of it completely. There are always going to be people who are less fortunate that would need our help. But the solution rather should be implementing new guidelines to avoid complete dependency of total families on the system. I actually think that two year limit was a good start but more needs to be done to make sure that the system functions properly...
"Only thing it does in this country is creating welfare generation, who does not work and get welfare checks from the govenment to live"
My dad does work. Are you saying he needs to work more hours? 60? 70? How much do you think a person can work?
"welfare is only creating problems and not helping anything in our society."
So I dont need to eat? Without food stamps I wouldnt be able to.
You sound like a stuck up, uninformed, naive person. Do not write about things you dont understand.
"I really don't understand. Every year, job openings are much MUCH higher than our unemployment rate. And there are still some people without a job. "
Well here's the thing: see, although there might be all these job openings, the people offering these job openings and hiring for them are often very picky about who they choose. So maybe a person will send out a hundred resumes or apply to more than a dozen places but they won't get a single call back or an interview. It's very complicated and while like you said, everyone should have a job, the people in charge of companies often only want the best so you might have all these people who don't have their high school diploma and have to work crappy jobs and end up on welfare programs to take care of their kids.
While I agree that people abuse the system, I think we should still keep most welfare programs. Especially ones like WIC which is a supplemental nutritional program for Women Infants and Children; programs like these help to ensure that we dont' have tons of children starving across the country. I think any program that offers food stamps also, is certainly valuable and would probably be better as opposed to giving people checks because if you give people checks then, yeah, they might just spend the money on alcohol or drugs, whereas food stamps they can only use on necessities.
what kind of family back ground do you come from? I ask because people who aren't actualy somhow a part of or know the system, hate it, and think it is useless. YES< it is FLAWED but we can't get rid of it..ah,,, see, i wonder if you have friends who are single moms like someone mentioned, people who are immigrants with legal stauts but don't get jobs because of the lack of language skills and know people who need welfare to help them get food for large families, heating in snowy winters.
PLease, don't say these things when you don't know if every person is only relying on welfare, my dad works full time and overtime, my mom can't because I have a sick grandma who we didnt put in assisted lving, two sibilings and without welfare we wouldn't be able to eat, sleep, and be warm in winters, have ac for my 80 year old grandma in summers
be Above All - Do no harm
Some of your ideas make sense, but I think that you just haven't thought it over completely. Like everyone has said, we cannot completely get rid of welfare. Although it would get rid of the people who are not supposed to be on welfare, it would also hurt people who really need the help. As stated in your post, welfare was started during the Great Depression. Back then, most people really needed it. They worked hard for what they could get and were thankful for the little assistance that they received from the government. The Great Depression gave rise to public works programs. This is what I believe was the most effective part of welfare. People need jobs that will allow them to live and maybe rations to cover the rest. Like mentioned above, it's much harder to abuse food stamps (and other types of rations) than "free money" received from welfare checks. It's not that we need to get rid of welfare, we need to reform it. By the way, be sure to check your spelling before posting. It's simple things such as this that harm credibility.
