Homework, Homework, Homework PART 2
By ladylau - Posted on February 23rd, 2008
Ok, so its time to continue the homework chit chat that we all love so much. For any of you that didn’t read my first blog on homework, stop reading this and go read my first blog. Then you can come back and read this one. =)
So once again, homework, homework, homework. We spend all morning in school and then we have to come home just to do some more work that the teachers didn’t have time to assign to us in class. Is it our fault that classes are tooooo short for them to go over everything they need to? I think not!!!
AND THE TEXT BOOKS!!!! Is it really necessary to make text books so big? Has anyone ever even had a teacher complete a whole text book before? I think after 13 years of school I have only had 2 teachers complete the text books. And, of course, they skipped chapters. So here is my proposition, why can’t teachers make copies of the pages we need instead of making us spend all this money on buying the books and then forcing us to carry the heavy things around in our backpacks all day. Why don’t we just pay for the copies instead of the books? AND I know that a lot of schools require community service hours in high school in order to graduate. Why not let some students
who need hours do the copying in order to earn some of the volunteer time? I mean the last time I weighed my backpack was in junior high and it was about 18 pounds I believe. I am afraid to know what it weighs now. COME ON!!! This is just ridiculous. Then they wonder why so many kids are developing back problems. HelloOoOoOoOo.
Let me know what you think about this!!!! Don’t be afraid to vent and don’t be afraid to procrastinate homework simply to leave a comment!!!!! I don’t mind. =) Stay tuned for a part 3 because I have a lot more to say.

I assume they have such large books because the books go out to many different teachers and the person who is writing the book never really knows what part of that subject the teacher will be teaching about, so they have to put all the information that they know about it in there, and we have such great technology these days that we can know pretty much everything about everything so thats why the books are so big, i think.
I agree, the homework is bull crap, but i mean sometimes its good to have to go over the information in a more comfortable environment, i know its easier for me to understand everything when i can look at it at home.
What I don't understand is how they can justify bringing out a new edition every year when they know that students can't afford it. Even if they could just make it so that you could use older editions but no! The writers will make just enough changes so that you have to buy the new edition!
I say we should carry a flashdrive with us instead of backpacks. Flashdrives can hold our information. Also, instead of books I say we should have online books. I want the world to be more advanced in technology. I am tired of writing on paper that I will eventually throw away.
This is a great idea. It would save time, space, and trees.
Almost all of my teachers finished the whole book in high school and college. If they aren't finishing the whole book, there's a good chance they're not covering all of the required curriculum. Some of the bigger ones are covered in courses that are taught in a series, but most can be covered in one year easily if the teacher doesn't suck and the students actually try to learn the material rather than memorizing a bunch of stuff instead.
Unfortunately, a lot of teachers do suck, and many students don't try to understand the material.

So... not to be pro-homework or anything but, the more problems that are there, the more practice and understanding a student gets. I know for math, I never totally understood what I was doing but knew how, then sometime with in the next few days of doing a gazillion of the same problems, it finally clicked.
As for the student's bad backs... Most students don't wear their backs properly. They have the shoulder straps all the way out, making the backpack lay down towards their butt. Add the weight of the textbooks, the pack is pulling them backwards, and they inturn have to hunch foreward, and Vaula! Bad Backs!
<<< KAT >>>
Sure, I'm pro-homework, just not ridiculous amounts of it that has no bearing on a class anyway. For instance, why would a Calculus prof make his students write a ten page paper on what Calculus is? That's just silly!
I am anti-test though. It seems to me that tests (excluding take-home tests) are in a way detrimental to learning. All students to is learn for the test, nothing more/
I could see the logic behind writing a paper about what calculus is. It would help the students to understand the significance, applications, and developments behind calculus. It would help to establish a connection between math and everyday life. But, a good teacher should be able to do the same thing.

Tell me about it omg i hate homework so much and me being in AP classes its just more work come on its work that is meaningless. Also its the freaking summer and I have Summer Reading and stuff like that man thats so wrong its not enough that I have so much work while in school that they have to give me work over my summer brake when I should be free from all that work. And its not little work either I have to read 5 books how am I suppose to remember all what I read about after reading 5 diffrent books and on one book I have to write like 7 essays to explain bout it omg I'm tired of this crap they expect us to do and as soon as we get to school they give us test about all these books. But sometimes they make us do all this summer readings then when we get back to school they don't even talk bout them so what the hell is the point seriously. I wasted my time and money on these books and beleive me they weren't cheap books they came out to like $200 for all of them and it was like $30 just for one gosh whats the point after we read it its just going to be there on the bookshelf oh and the sad thing is that at the end of the school year the teacher has you turn in that book that YOU yourself paid for with YOUR money as extra credit but says that its manditory so she can donate to next years student but why if we didn't get that chance and we had to pay for our own book do they get the book for free from us that is so not fair. GRRRRR I'm stressing out now just thinking about school and all that hard work And you know what really makes me mad is when you have worked so so hard and then you get your report card and that teacher gives you a 79 omg i just think why cant you just give me an 80 I would be so so much happier and won't want to slap the teacher accross her face because she and I both know I deserve that 80 but no she likes being mean and hating on every student that trys hard but if you don't do anything you pass with above 80 seriously they need to be hit. But I guess well let me stop writing because i know I can go on and on about Homework and school work . =0
You do have a choice in taking AP classes.
In my experience, all AP and Honors classes have summer assignments. Including AP Studio Art.
