Can a person be Christian and a Homosexual? The Bible condemns homosexual behavior

There is no question that the Bible condemns homosexual behavior in both the Old and the New Testaments. Let's look at two examples:

"You shall not lie with a male as one lies with a female; it is an abomination" (Leviticus 18:22).

"Or do you not know that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, not idolators, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, shall inherit the kingdom of God" (I Corinthians 6:9-10).

But which Bible? The one written in the original language, or the one that has gone through countless translations including one into a Shakespeare-inspired Elizibethan dialect?

no this one is original written in Geeze and its a very old bible

The bible also states, "Love the sinner Hate the sin."

so you do agree that homosexual behavior is a sin

the bible says its a sin, you never questioned me about it, i thought this was a bible attack not a personal condemnation.

The Bible does not say "Love the sinner Hate the sin."

It doesn't say that in those exact words, maybe, but it's implied. Jesus never hated any sinners. Did He hate the sins they were committing? Yes.

what exactly was the point, I missed it. The bible def. condemns homosexuality. I use the KJV,bty

Yes this is a confusing conversation.

The Bible definately condemns homosexual behavior.

The new testament embraces all sinners, including practicioners of the faith and nonchristians. That pretty well includes everyone.

So yes you can be a homosexual, a gambler, and a gossip and still be a christian. Though you will be a hypocrite if you consistently go against the bible in acting out these 'titles', by behaving in these ways.

I am a bad Christian, but I'm proud to be with Christ, not of myself.

Just because the bible condomns gambling and gossip.

Sorry,

Just because the bible condemns those behaviors doesn't mean people with those titles can't become and maintain the title of christian.

But there is a difference between being saved and living out the faith. I wish more chrisitians would live out the faith, that includes me to an extent

I have a question.
If there is no righteous-"no not one", then who is to inherit the Kingdom of God? And in any case, what precisely is the Kingdom of God? One surely cannot become the ruler over Heaven while Jesus Christ reigns.
Could it not be possible that some pious politic back in the day wormed his own ideals into the Bible in order to convince the church that his opinions were fact? The Bible has been changed so many times by different people. Also, let's not forget how many times it has been translated (and we all know how accurate translations tend to be regardless of intent).
The aforementioned being fact, one must then ask, is it God's will that the Bible be changed like it has and will continue to be, or has God's word been perverted?

well not one of us is a saint but that is why jesus christ died to save us so we can ask for forgiveness to what ever sin we commit. and the kingdom of God is for us to inherit we are the children of God its not to say that we will be equal to God but we will be with God for all time.

Can a person play Pro Football, yet still be a Christian? The 4th Commandment requires keeping the Sabbath day holy with No work.

The Bible does condemn homosexual behavior. And I'm 100% against homosexual sex...but I'm also 100% against premarital heterosexual sex. Everyone thinks Catholics such as me are against homosexuals, but that is not the case. There are even Catholics who are homosexuals; they just decide to live chaste lives. But it would be the equivalent of me if I never got married. I won't have premarital sex, so if I never get married, I will never have sex. And that's what I believe homosexuals have to do. They have to commit to chaste lives. So I don't think homosexual sex is worse than any premarital sex. They're both sins and against the Church.

Forgive me for being a devil's advocate.
You, I'm sure commit sins against the Church every day.
It's understood that you can procure forgiveness. Why is forgiveness out of reach for bisexuals?

Well they are not… they can ask for forgiveness and all their past sins will be commuted but only their past sins if they know it’s a sin and they keep participating hoping and knowing they will be forgiven then it’s like they are testing the limits of God. And you really have to ask for forgiveness from the bottom of your heart for it to be counted.

It isn't out of reach. Anyone can go to Confession and be cleansed from their sins if they are truly sorry for them. I don't commit sins intentionally just because I have the sacrament of confession available to me.

The Bible does indeed condemn homosexuals as sinners, but there is no reason a homosexual person cannot beleive in God. I am Bisexual and I believe in God and consider myself a christian.

I know I'll probably get some flack for this but here goes anyway.

The bible was written by men. It may be the word of god but it is through the mind and pen of human beings. People are fallible, they are hypocritical, they are liars, and they hate.

I choose to believe that God is none of these things and can see past our indiscretions (sp? sorry) and when we give our hearts to him, he will walk with us always. I'm not saying to throw the bible out I'm just saying maybe it should be taken with a grain of salt... or however that saying goes.

Disciples and Saints who abandoned this world and became pure, those are the people who wrote the Bible make no mistake the Bible is the word of God and I think instead of following the word of God we try to make it easy on ourselves and say that “even if God said this God would understand if we don’t do it

I am a human and all humans fail time after time. I am also a Christian, but have very little faith in people. I don't know how much I believe in the Bible, but I do know that parts of it remain true simply because I have experienced them and lived through them. Jesus is the Son of God and He walked this earth like any man. He knows temptation because He was tempted, so He understands our weakness, and forgives if our hearts are right. That's all He looks at. The heart.

As far as the homosexual question, I don't know. I am not a homosexual, so I don't understand how it works. Some say it's a choice, some say it's not. My roommate is and he says he hates it, wishes he could be straight. So, again, if your heart is in the right place (and you can't lie to God), I believe you are just as likely to be with God as a brand new baby.

-I agree with you, but that doesn't mean we can necessarily sin and still get to heaven. I don't believe that people who have homosexual sex (and understand that it's against God's will) can get to Heaven unless the go to Confession. I also don't think those who have premarital sex can get to Heaven if they realize it's against God's will. It's not important whether the Bible was written by men or women, it's still the word of God.

I sometimes have trouble accepting the concept of hell in general. So yeah.

And I'd also like to reiterate again that the Bible was once used to justify slavery. It wasn't that long ago.

Can a liar be a christian? Can someone who disobey's his parents be a Christian? Can someone who commits a sin be a Christian? The bible says that homosexuality is a sin, not that homosexuals cant be Christians. We have all sinned and instead of pointing the finger at other people's sins it is time we dealt with our own.

None of us are saints but you misunderstand the point. You see "we" are not the ones who are "pointing the finger" it says it clearly and openly in the Bible and that is just it. If one is a christian one has to follow the Bible. You are trying to make an excuse for sins by using "common sins" as example well how about a Murderer, can a murderer be a Christian?

lilpumpkin's picture

yeah the bible also says that polygamy is the right way to go! (multiple wives) we obviously don't believe that's right anymore. The bible has to adapt itself to the times, and people can make the bible say whatever they want it to say.
but you are right, it does state pretty clearly that homosexuality is bad. It just gets confusing with the multiple meanings in things. What is the hidden message in those things?

Somewhere in the practice of Christianity someone (I'm pretty sure it was Jesus) said "Judge not, lest ye be judged." I think we should leave homosexuals alone for God to judge. In the meantime, I am going to continue to be with friends with my gay peers. I am not God, I don't WANT to be God. I'll let him do the judging.

The Bible has been re-translated so many times, it's difficult to know what the original said, no matter how old your copy is. When the original Aramaeic (spelling?) Bible was written, there was no word in their language for "homosexual" or "sodomist." The Sodomites referred to in Leviticus were, I believe, citizens of Sodom and I believe that the story was originally there to teach a moral lesson regarding hospitality. The Old Testament is often taken or left depending on what mood people seem to be in. In the same sections in which homosexuality is condemned, it says that it is wrong to eat shrimp, that an infectuous rash is clean if it has spread all over your body, and that women must give sin and guilt offerings to priests after giving birth. Obviously, a lot changed when Jesus came. His message was not to consider ourselves disgusting creatures, unworthy of God's pity, but almost students seeking to know God (at least that's how I see it.) He encouraged people not to judge one another, to love, and to simply be good people. I know gay people who otherwise uphold the Christian religion better than some straight people do. I think Christianity is about your devotion to Jesus, not about who you're sleeping with.

I often hear the same people who make comments about homosexuality being a sin talking about having premarital sex or "messing around" with people they are not committed to. The whole point of Christianity is that we can be forgiven and that God can accept us, whereas, it was previously believed that God was disgusted by humanity as a whole.

Just about every type of sex imagineable is condemned in some part of the Bible. But I think the important thing, for Christians, is to apply the teachings of Christ to their daily lives, not to fret over whether or not this or that is a sin. I think God recognizes people with good hearts, and that if you believe in Christianity, you believe that those people will be rewarded.

Sorry for the length of this post.

The Old Testament was written in Hebrew, the language of the Israelites. Most of the New Testament was written in Greek. Given that homosexuality was an open part of Greek and Roman culture, I'm sure there were plenty of words at the authors' (primarily the Apostle Paul) disposal to refer to such relationships.

There's nothing like a trail of blood to find your way back home.
