My school's paper opinion section was about the new phase "emo." Emo means emotional, along with many other meanings. They say that lyrics to so called "emo" songs are very good. The "emo" pose is to wear all black, put your hood up, put your black hair in your face and look down. These people are said to have emotional problems and they seclude themselves. I beg to differ. Every "emo" character I have seen has been very outgoing and in a lot of cases, plain obnoxious. From the outside it wouldn't appear that they have any problems, but everyone is good at hiding them. I do not understand how "emo" can be a phase or a way to dress, if everyone is emotional. They are striving to be different, but they all look the same, black hair, or outgoing colors, draped in their faces. I can do that too, cry a little, and be emo I guess.
I could rant and rave about past phases, but this one seems to be hitting home the most. I have had "emo" people lash out at me and call me ugly and tell me I need to wear make-up. When I see them though, thats all I see, is make up. And a made up person.
I am all for indivudality. But how can you claim you are an indvidual because you have problems and emotions?
I have problems and emotions.
I guess I am emo, and so is everyone else in this world.

Emo isnt a mood. It doesn't mean "one who is emotional". Thats what it started as but now its a huge pathetic scene of kids who are trying to be individuals yet conforming themselves to the stereotypes of the group at the same time.
Emo is the most ridiculous trend in the world, and if I could go without ever hearing the word again, I think I would die from happiness.
I don't think Emo can be even counted as a trend. It kind of combines different trends into itself.
i hate labels...goth, emo, punk, etc...all genres of music not people
I am curious to the definition of "Emo" after reading your piece, but it sounds from what you described as a style of personality where you show your emotions. Right? I guess that could be a style because there are many people who don't show their emotions, or aren't very emotional and that is their style. As far as Emo music, which I do know what that style is... I am not a big fan.
The "your ugly and should wear makeup" example is interesting. If they are all in makeup and telling others to also, then that is not hypocritical, that is just a possible view on how they think people should behave. They are following their own advice by wearing makeup also, so I see nothing inconsistant or illogical about that comment, unless I misunderstood.
Oh, my bad, I just realized where you comment on my blog came from now. Hahaha! You should have responded here instead of on my blog on a totally unrelated subject. Anyway, because one is consistant or non hypocrytical, does not make them right or wrong. So you could criticise them for being superficial, or fake, but not for being hypocritical, which is what was suggested by saying that they are the ones wearing make-up.
Sorry. I am just learning how to use all of this.
But okay, yeah I get it now.

Emo people are those semi- or fully-depressed bunch who think they're deep because they got problems. They don't realize that everyone has problems--some of us just don't flaunt them in the spirit of being emo.
emo seems like just another style.. i don't think you can stereotype a person who dresses a certain way on their personality or what problems they have...
Having problems is a natural part of life. Emo people and non-emo people alike .. all of our lives suck at one point. But that's natural, as I said before. That doesn't mean that everyone is emo.
Emo isn't this "deep state of mind", as some like to profess. It's a style of music and clothing. If anything, it's more of a joke than anything else.
yes i do believe that everyone is "emo" because everyone is emotional. Everyone has emotions. being "emo" is just another clique to put yourself into because being "goth" has a short fuse now....(sarcasm) all of this categorizing bull is starting to anger me (hey i'm being emo...angry) hah well anyways it is all ridiculous but it will most likely never end
wow emo pple, if a boy is emo its called gay not emo, its ok for a girl 2 be emo not for a boy, ur 2 much of a disgrace 2 men gay fags
well thats what you may think. you fucking closet faget. If you want to get anywhere in life you should accept other peoples feelings. and actually some emos are bisexual. You think of emo boys being gay when your fucking sexist. by saying only girls can be emo and not be considerd gay. get a life you psychotic retard. Emo guys are hot and i bet ur ugly as hell qwazie motto. So if your labeling emo guys Gay and emo girls not gay because there girls, then im sure many people are labeling you plenty of things too. like me for instance. Your the discrace to men YOU gay fag.
tehee you lovely person. =] bloody i loveeeeeeee you.
GOD KNOWS what emo is.....there are soo many definitions and interpretations of it, and websites on 'how to dress emo' and some contradict each other and say different things. i personally think labels suck. There is also an unbelivable amount of music genres that you can't keep up with them, then comes the fashion. people in the music scene at the local gigs dislike each other becoz the other people are dressed 'emo' or something, even tho we are there for the music not for what you look like. im thru with trying to understand what emo is there is also this matter with 'scene kids' ive been called one, but whats scene kid if you dont even know what emo really is. i cry at times, write poetry, paint and draw, play in a band, wear skinny fit jeans...that make me emo? coz i have no idea, i think that everyone shud jus try and be thereselves.
hello, i'm Ash, i jus wanted to say for all those people who hate emo's, you dnt no wat they go thru! u have no idea..u jus jugde em b coz they r not like you, dey r being them self n not like u all, so such ur mouth n mind ur own business u wang munchers... Ryan: hello i am 1 of the most funniest pplz in the world, and im EMO! wuldnt think so wuld ya? umm... dodoododdooo actually i jus wanted to write sumfin jus so i can look kool :P p.s DONT HATE EMO"S pleeeez.
I so totaly undersand you coz i am emo does anyone here even know what it is. i will explain if you dont, It is when u are having emotional problems so u take it out on yourself by cutting your wrists.
y do very 1 call pplz that cut "emo"? jus coz they cut dnt mean it! there are emo cutters and theres jus cutters! thats all!
im not on drugs!i was ment to say there are cutters and ther are emo's that cut! they r 2 different things! there happy?
Everyone has a different idea of what "emo" is. Emo is short for emotional, and everyone has emotions. Some people like to express themselves more than others. these people are highly sensitive and arent afraid to show their emo"ness.
some people are addicted to self harm. it doesnt mean ur emo. Cutting is one of the hardest things to stop. ='( and its addictive. DONT DO IT. it will ruin you. Others may walk with there head held down and look depressed. But hey i guess everyone has a way of dealing with things. Emo is also a genre of music. emo music doesnt just sing about depression and feeling sorry about your life but its also about being happy and wanting something to last forever, like dashboard confessional.
I have been called emo by many. And i clearly have an idea of what emo is. personally i am one who labels who is and isnt an emo kid, But only because ive gotten so familiar with the subject To my understanding it's by their dark black bed head fringe over one eye hair. and the piercings. and the x's on the hands. Maybe im emo but its stupid to label urself. I was called emo by an emo guy. and i am madly in love with him. x{haha, I fucking love skylar.}x well, My hair is black and spiked in the back and it goes over the half of my face. I have my lip pierced 3 times and a hoop in my nose. and i got over a severe cutting problem and im not afraid to cry. I wear thick black and red makeup and i try to cover up my uglyness. I listen to emo music. I would die without it. I wear half gloves and write x's on my hand's and wear thick rim glasses. "emo?" possibly. My point of view is that well, everyone has a little emo in them right? because without emo"tions. you can't feel. you wouldn't be able to smile or cry or love, or get pissed. I guess its your point of view. So many points of views of being emo are out there.
Okay first things first...I've read all comments, and I see...Oh, You don't know what emo's go through, you make it harder by judging them..they are trying to be themselves....first thing...If they didsn't want to be judged and criticised they wouldn't follow this "emo" trend...and another thing...why dress the same...if you have problems and hate being made fun of, you dress like something many people hate? And they aren't being themselves...they're trend followers. I mean, nothing against "emo's" but that's ridiculous...I think "emo" has become way out of term in real life. I mean..."emo" is emotional, like discussed...Many people have emotional problems, and these "emo" people say life sucks because so and so dumped them, and my life sucks because of whatever stupid dramatic reason...people have it was worse than these "emo" people...Like take it, homeless people, you don;t see them going out to by tight pants and clothes...they can't afford it...Kids in third world countries are dieing, but "emo's" have it oh so bad. Enough said...I suggest everyone smarten up, let people be who they want to be, but don't bullshit your way by saying they are being themselves.
Ok I looked at all the enteries and what i dont get it why "emo" is so hated. Ive been looking into this way of life and its nuthing to hate. Its like being a prep or jock. who cares? I mean if u have enough time to hate ppl just because what they look like, its as bad as being white and hating black ppl or being a blond and hating red heads. I mean its a way of life not a style. Ive read alot about it ... i dont see why ppl are making such a big deal, if you dont like it dont do it, dont hate it. As for "emos" walking around derpessed all the time, thats not even true. Ive seen lots of "emos" at school laughing with thier friends. "emo" doesnt mean you are deppressed but that you can and do show your emotions. Its nothing to hate. Yes some ppl have turned it into a "trend" and just because you are "emo" doesnt mean you have to mae out with guys, or cut. It depends how you feel and veiw "emo" so quit saying they are fags or what ever because its an individual choice not a "emo" choice
What was the essential meaning of emo, is dead...the posers have killed it. Emo is a type of music (not "emotional" either), not a person...I would rant but I think Chelsea has summed it up in Definition No.7 on here http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=emo . I confess...I do hate emos. If they called themselves something else besides the term "emo", I may not hate them. But just the fact that they have associated themselves with and transformed the traditional definition of glorious emo into what we know today disgusts me to the point of self harm, however I don't because I would be labelled one of them. If you are one of these "emo"'s, in my opinion, call yourself something else or you need a bullet.
Ok, alot of people have different veiws of what "emo" means. na di'm sure we've all heard a million times that it's means emotional. but that doesn't change the fact that our society has a major stereotyping issue, not only with the phrase "emo" but with all those other labels such as "prep","punk","goth"..ect. And the people who are doing all the judging arn't the only ones to blame, the people who are participating and labling themselves as this stereotype is also responsible, as they don't know what this word really means and are just following the guidelines all the other stereotypers has given them. The best way to stop this is to just be yourselve no matter what that means, and don't give into the stereotyping. If somone calls you a label, say "No, i me.". and just my own opinion:if some people would stop just following trends and be themselves, especially when they have no idea what their doing and are just dressing up as what other people consider emo or prep (for example) then maybe this stereotyping would stop.
Time for a history lesson before I explode. Emo is (was) a genre of music that came out of hardcore (a post-punk movement sparked by Dead Kennedys and followed by Black Flag, Minor Threat, and Fugazi among others). Ian McKaye (formerly the frontman of Minor Threat among other bands) started a band called Embrace. Musically, Embrace was alot like Minor Threat except that McKaye changed his lyrical style to be less pedantic and more emotional. Other bands followed suit (including Rites of Spring, Dag Nasty and Moss Icon), and followers of the DC hardcore scene (where both Minor Threat and Embrace were from) started calling this new movement "emo" which was short not for "emotional" but for "emotive hardcore."
Flash forward to the early to mid 90s bands influenced by the emo sound (Sunny Day Real Estate, At the Drive In, etc.) make emo more musical and compositional in comparison to the former homophonic and power chord structure. Also, they took the vocal style of the emo bands whose vocals were more melodic and (for lack of a better word) whiney.
Then, Jimmy Eat World comes along. Jimmy Eat World's early musical efforts were very much in the style of traditional emo with the spoken or sung verses and the sung or screamed hooks, but as the band evolved (some, myself included, would say devolved) they took on a new sound, more akin to pop punk or indie, yet the label "emo" stuck with them.
The fans of traditional emo generally reviled this new genre being labelled as "emo" and some took to calling the traditional emo genre "emocore" or "screamo" (some bands and fans, so afraid of this new connotation of emo, started calling the genre "post-hardcore").
Eventually, this new emo was denoted only by the vocal delivery and the lyrical style, and thus acts like Bright Eyes and Dashboard Confessional were labelled "emo," even though their music is about as far from the original genre as you can get.
Emo is only the latest developement in a continuing trend of a popularized "underground" emotive (and angsty) genre, starting with garage rock in the 60s (with bands like The Fugs, MC5 and The Monks), evolving to punk in the 70s (with bands like Dead Kennedys, The Ramones, and The Sex Pistols) to Hardcore in the 80s (Minor Threat, Black Flag, and Bad Brains) to Grunge in the early 90s (Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Alice in Chains) to Nu-Metal in the late 90s (Slipknot, Hatebreed, and Kittie) and then finally to Emo.
Although most of the emo genre is dominated by bands far from the roots of emo, there are many bands who keep up the traditional emo sound including Circle Takes the Square, Converge, Underoath, and Rise Against!.
It's kind of rediculous for someone to say that a person is emo, calling them a genre of music, but I suppose we do the same thing for ska, metal, and punk.

I think that people get labeled (and that's a stupid thing anyway) because they appear to be more emotional than others and they draw attention to the fact that they are slightly dramatic. In a completely different way than...say cheerleaders! Waiting for better days...
