Why are some scholarships so hard to get?

Have you ever looked at some scholarships and think they're perfect for you until you look at the qualifications small print, such as....must have 3.5 gpa, must be a junior, or must have a 28 ACT score?  I've often wondered why they put some scholarships so high....at first I believed it was to ensure that sucessful students get them, but then I thought even more, do many of you really know any juniors in college who have a 28 ACT score, and at least a 3.5 gpa?  Many juniors don't even have the gpa unless they are geniuses.  I don't think many people if any qualify for some scholarships, I think its just a tax write off for some companies to offer scholarships.  What do you think?

"Knowledge resulting from study and research in a particular field" If you dont have the criteria required for a scholarship, maybe you should study a lil harder. Why lower the standards? Keep them high up, so people like you don't have to go to college...lol

Yea some scholarships are so specific. My GPA is around 3.8, though, and I've also seen lots of scholarships that are for people between 3.4 and 3.7 GPA. I think everyone can find at least something that they qualify for.

There are so many factors that go into determining qualifications for scholarships.

Some are geared towards academic excellence, and consequently set high academic standards (test scores, GPA, etc.) as qualifying factors.

Others are geared towards specific academic performance, which may not be the absolute best academic performance. This is often in response to the scholarships that are looking for the ultimate cream of the academic crop and leaving the others to the wayside.

You have to realize that many people are just like you and me, they are actively looking for and applying for scholarships. Nobody wants to spend their own money for college, not even if they have the money. In addition, most non-profit organizations offer scholarships, also known as essay contests. They don't have to worry about tax writeoffs.

In addition, people giving out scholarships don't want to look at many applicants, they all want to look at the cream of the crop. They either want to give it to the poorer people (need based) or the smarter people (merit based). You will most likely never find a scholarship for a 2.0 GPA, and if you do, your chances of getting it become synonymous with playing the lottery.

By the way, where are you finding scholarships where you must have a 3.5 GPA? (I have a 3.8 :-)

because of the money amout they give

I think it is hard to find scholarships that you meet the guidelines. But how do you make yourself stand out when completing scholarship?

THere are a LOT of people with over a 3.5 and 28 ACT score. Some institutions require a 27 or higher for guaranteed admission, and lots of students still get guaranteed admission. The reason many scholarships have strict guidelines is because the people who award them realize that a student with a higher GPA is more likely to succed in college, whether they study harder than everyone else or just don't have to try very hard. The reality is that success in college is strongly measured by GPA. Also, it's their money. They get to pick who it goes to. If you decide to give a gift, nobody forces you to give it to anyone. You get to choose.
