The Beijing Olympics

If you have been watching the news recently, you must know that people around the world have been boycotting the Olympics, or protesting against the Olympics. There are many reasons as to why people are taking these actions, and I am one of them. The reason I have decided to boycott this year's Olympics is Burma (now called Myanmar). This country is one that is not well known, but prosperous in natural resources. Unfortunately, thse resources are going to waste in a country ruled by a military junta.

China is the number one provider of weapons to Burma, and the military regime's number one supporter. Burma has more child soldiers than any other country in the world (about 70,000 children). Some of these children are as young as eleven years-old.

On August 8, 1988, students led a peaceful protest for democracy (the 8888 Uprising), but it ended with more than 10,000 deaths. August 8, 2008, will be the 20th anniversary of this massacre, which is a huge insult to the people of Burma.

The U.S. Campaign for Burma says, "This is not a game," and I agree with them one-hundred percent. Not only are people boycotting the Olympics for Burma, but for Tibet and Darfur. These three countries have been through much suffering and turmoil throughout the years, and it's time for a change.
