Defining Genocide

The article “Defining Genocide” gave the facts on what is considered genocide by the United Nations. The UN Convention on Genocide held in December 1948 passed a treaty which defines Genocide and calls that Genocide be prevented and punished in the future. It argues that the definition of genocide is considered to narrow, and that none of the mass killings since 1948 fall under the UN definition of Genocide. The article also tells of how the term genocide has lost its meaning over the years. The word which once held a very powerful meaning has now lost its power and is used much too loosely. “Defining Genocide” also gives some history about genocides of the past, but it is unclear as to the exact number of genocides. Some experts say only one, others say at least three. The exact number of genocides may be unclear but one thing is clear “Genocide is the gravest and greatest of crimes against humanity”.
