The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism

I just watched an interview on Charlie Rose with a very insightful author. Naomi Klein.

Charlie Rose is generally a very good interviewer, but in this case he seemed to interrupt and misconstrue her. Ms. Klein was far more clear thinking, and the interview left me wanting to hear more from her.

I have not read anything by her, but that will soon change.

Her thesis is against Corporate/Government collusion in the guise of privatization (actually monopolization in many specific cases) which has been put in place in the wake of disasters, and crises.

Although I am very pro free markets, and she is not, she eloquently expresses a concern that I have. When big money lobbyists are the strongest influences on legislative bodies, as they are in the US, you get rules favorable to the existing corporate interests which are not free trade, and do not protect the interests of consumers or competition. One aspect of her arguments that I find disingenuous is against Milton Freidman, and his quest for radical free trade. He would have opposed this type monopolistic behavior as an anti competitive corruption of those principles.

The movement against corporate domination is one that is being used as a way for leftist politicians to regain some of the power, and credibility they lost as communism and socialism have been discredited. Those politicians will attempt to twist this movement into a new socialism, just as the corporations have corrupted free markets into the form we see today.
