This is a line that Will Ferrell speaks in the movie Elf. I'm a big SNL fan in general and this line is priceless every time. Ferrell's character is obviously telling someone that they're a big fat liar. It's a funny scene, but I can't help but think these days that as a world, we're not serious enough about lying and dishonesty.
This has all come about in me after seeing the movie Atonement. (Don't worry, no spoilers below.) It's now on my top ten favorite movies list. It's one of the best I've seen, but it's terrible. I'm not talking about one of those movies that are so bad that they're hilarious. The movie is so well made and enthralling, but the subject matter hits me on such an evil level. The movie portrays pure human evil. Part of the message for me has to do with the fact that one of the characters tells a huge lie. It causes insurmountable consequences that are just heartbreaking for me to watch. If you think one lie cannot do any damage, you're wrong. You'll just have to watch it, if you're interested, because I'm not one to ruin movies.
To me, all lies have consequences, some more than others. So, why do we lie? Why can't we just fess up and tell the truth. I guess if there's something to gain from lying, then it entices us in a seductive way that makes the lie irresistible. Lies are evil. Some people are where they are in life because of their personal thrones of lies. Maybe most of us fly the straight and narrow and lies don't effect us that much. Although, we've all lied at some point. Are we in need of some atonement ourselves? Is atonement always possible in some way? I would answer yes to both questions.
In my book, life's too short to lie. I'm not going to fool around with the nasty consequences just to get some temporary satisfaction. Atonement is a movie, but it's close to real life. I'm thinking these days now that lying is no laughing matter.

I LOVE THAT MOVIE! Will Farrell is so ridiculously funny sometimes. Have you seen "Stranger Than Fiction?" It's great, IMHO.

Now it's at the top of mental "next movie to watch" pile. I'll try to watch it ASAP now.

I was eight years old when I got caught telling a lie to my father. He just looked at me and said, "I'm very disappointed in you." Now, my father was and still is my hero. After that moment, I can't lie. I remember my father looking at me with all that sadness, and I never want to let him down.
The sanity within is overwhelming.
It's frightening how casual we often are where lying is concerned. I'd personally rather be honest and hated than lying and loved. Lying takes too much energy, too much effort and it's never as simple as we make it out to be. Even telling your friend she looks great in that dress (when you know it's not true) has consequences. It may make her feel better for a minute, but she's going to feel a hell of a lot worse when she realizes the group across the hall are giggling because she looks like someone vomited on her.
I can't wait to see Atonement. The more I hear about it, the more impatient I become. Hurry up Netflix!!

Looks like I have another movie to the list of 'I hope to see one day movie list'. As a youngster I discovered the ease in which I can lie...and I am believable too. I also get a bigger kick out of being unusually honest with peopl.
I will never lie to you...The truth rocks!
