How does one define themselves in a matter of minutes?

I am taking a required speech and communication class right now, and our first speech requires us to define ourselves through some cultural or social aspect of ourselves. It seems as though it would be simple, however, we have three minutes to, in essence, introduce ourselves to the class. I decided to introduce myself as a Christian and discuss how my faith is the reason I am still here, and how it has changed my life. To me, my religion influences my morals, my decisions that I make, and is the reason I respond to certain painful aspects in my life the way I do. It allows me to be able to not worry so much, and has helped me significantly even though my life has been traumatic. I'm not sure I want to share what these traumas are with my class though. But this is something that has never changed for me since I was in middle school. My friends, my goals, my plans, my physical appearance, my opinions all may have changed over time, but this is the one thing that has kept me grounded, that defines who I am on many levels, ways that you wouldn't even reconginize if I don't explicitly mention them. I just wonder how everyone else in the world would define themselves. What is the one thing that influences others so drastically, that plays such an important role in their lives. It doesn't have to be religion, it could be anything. How do you define yourself? What if you had three minutes to try and make true self known? What would you say?

i would say that art is a really influential part of my life because i have been drawing since i could write. it has also allowed me to release my stress and negative energy. at first i drew just for the fun of it, but now i draw to pursue a career in fashion. i draw fashion figures and this has changed my point of view of artists. it is very hard to perfect a piece and be completely happy with it; therefore determination and patience is vital for anything to get done right.

I think that anything people use as a coping mechanism ( to release stress and such) is a really great way for people to express themselves. It's interesting how people's passion for things can evolve too, as you said, you now want to pursue a career in art. I definately did not start out as a strong Christian, but over time I began to become much stronger in my faith.

I took a comm class during a speedy summer semester. What I did was tell a few anecdotes were i was right or something crazy happened because no body listened to me. People laughed and made guesses at what my little stories meant about mean. The purpose of the assignment is not to define yourself, but to practice talking infront of people using a comfy topic you should know well about and to get to know your classmates. What ever you decide remember the rules, know your audience (which you should after evryone has done there speech), make eye contact, move but do not flail or pace, and try not to studder or use the forget ful 'UH'. its is practice of following the rules. Good luck and remember pray first.
