Naughty boys get tied to trees.

fallon's picture

*Rant Advisory*

According to a CNN article, "a couple accused of killing their 13-year-old son by tying him to a tree for two nights for punishment appeared in a North Carolina courtroom Monday to face charges of murder and felony child abuse."

...!!!

You know that reaction you just had? Yeah; mine was kinda like that too. I'm probably beating a dead horse with the subject of shitty parenting by now... but I swear every day I hear something new that makes me fly off the handle yet again on the subject. I actually find that rather comforting, to be honest. I'd rather be infuriated every time I hear these stories than to ever become numb to them.

I just really do not understand what kind of moronic individual could ever possibly think it's a good idea to tie a child to a tree overnight, to keep a child in a cage overnight, to tie a child to a bed at night, to burn a child with cigarettes, to make a child smoke a pack of cigarettes, to give a child a bottle of alcohol to get them to shut up, to give a child drugs because in some alternate universe it's funny or any of the other absolutely senseless things I've heard about some freaking dillhole of a parent having done at some point over the last year or two.

I mean good freaking grief! My dog, as hyperactive and just down right mentally not there as she often can be, knows better. No, seriously. My bark at every person who walks by, hide under the bed for two days if I bring out the brush, hold flies into her mouth until they die and then deposit them on the floor, chase her tail tiny little dog has more sense than some parents do. Dear lord, I wouldn't put it past her to do better raising these children than some parents do, dog insanity present or no.

In case we forgot... children are people, not inanimate objects. They are subject to the same needs as are the rest of us. They poop (lots!), they cry, they get sick, they get loud (really loud! really, really loud!), they ignore our advice, they have tantrums and do all sorts of other things that sometimes drive us up the fucking wall... what else did you expect when you decided to open your legs (or flop it out of your pants?)

I mean, you must have been intelligent enough when you were deciding to make that child to realize that it wasn't going to come out quoting Shakespeare and making six figures a year. If you knew how to get the penis in the vagina, surely you were intelligent enough to realize that a child might result and that the child would *gasp* require at least 18 years of your oh so valuable attention.

Jesus tapdancing Christ... how is it possible that people are so fucking dumb and still have the ability to reproduce?! If ever we needed a law, it would seriously be that idiotic dillholes are heretofore forbidden to reproduce. Those that do shall be tied to a tree. And left there... kinda like that little boy... only I'm half certain those people would actually deserve being tied to a tree... unlike that little boy.

His parents get the tree first. Only, let's leave them there. And throw pine cones at them. Every day. For at least the next 13 years. Consider it repayment for the 13 years of hell they undoubtedly gave that child before their stupidity eventually killed him.

Stupid freaking piece of crap parents.

Jesus.

Agreed, Fallon. I don't think forbidding ppl to have kids is the answer (too much potental for way too much governmental power) but as a survivor of horrible abuse of this kind, (and just a human being), it absolutely pissed me off to no end! Thank you for this! KEEP BEING PISSED OFF! When we are numb, we cannot act, and all that is necessary for the triumph of evil is for good people to do nothing.

I know that isn't an answer... but some days it sounds like a bloody brilliant idea. I wouldn't argue too much against a law requiring parenting courses, however. If we have to take lessons in order to drive a car... we should most certainly be capable of taking courses in order to rear a living, breathing child.

I'm so sorry that you had to endure abuse of this nature, but I am infinitely grateful that you made it through it and have not forgotten or become immune to it went it happens to others.

Ever gotten one of those stuck in your finger? Ouch.

If the cage of which you speak was the Minnesota case a few years back, where the parents kept their teenage daughter locked in a cage with a floor drain as a toilet and an old car seat to sit and sleep in, here's an interesting tidbit...did you know that they really believed she was perfectly safe and that locking her in there for weeks was really their best course of action when she turned 13 and got mouthy? And did you further know that her parents had won a two million dollar power ball a few years prior and had already pissed it all away? Bizarre.

There have been quite a few of those cases. The first one I remember hearing about was that couple with all of the boys. Not sure if you remember it, but they had several boys (some teenagers) that they kept in cages because they would, supposedly, eat trash. The oldest boy was like 18 and weighted something like 98 pounds.

That always breaks my heart.

Pine cones and spiky things?! I must be a vengful person because I was thinking about whips and rocks.

I am guilty of locking my kids in the puppy cage but before you get all pitch fork on me let me explain. My kids thought it was funny to go in there and hang out and color on the kennel walls. They would fuss and beg till I closed the puppy door and set the latch, they would pretend to bark and thought I was the best. I of course made them come out when I saw any inkling of a spider or it was getting to hot regardless of the tears. For what those other parents do though.... unexcusable.

You make a valid point. I can not stand it when people make me angry with their moronic insane parenting skills that they show off for the public. If I ever got complacent and numb to it, may I trust that you all will come pine cone me?

I will absolutely pinecone you if you get complacent about it.

As for the other, we have a dog cage here that Kaia used to play in all the time. He'd gather up his toys and my dog and they'd all climb into the cage and play for ages. We'd have to convince him that he didn't really want to eat lunch in the cage. I always worried that because of the moronic people who lock their kids in cages to make them sleep that if anyone ever saw Kaia in the cage, they'd call the police and we'd never be able to explain why he was sitting in the cage with his toys and the dog. Never happened, but the thought still crosses my mind on the odd occasion that he climbs in for a few minutes. It's really rather a sad commentary on the state of people that you're scared to let your kid play in a cage because of the idiotic people who make their kids stay in a cage. I hate that.

My stepmom was one of those evil people. When I was little (keep in mind, my parents were divorced when I was 5, and I moved in with my mom just before I turned 7), I basically said her sister was fat (she was, but that's beside the point. I think my exact phrasing was something like 'wow... the car sunk real low when auntie got in'). As punishment, she made me drag a stack of wood probably about 2 feet high and maybe 10 feet long (and probably 2 foot long pieces) from one end of the yard and back in one day. If I didn't finish, I'd have to drag what I didn't move the day before and then start again.

My dad worked nights at the time, and one night, probably a week and a half into my punishment, I was working so late that I saw him leave for work. Now, there was no one outside with me, so I got scared by the dark and ran in, even though I only had a little bit of work left to do. She made me keep doing it, and when I didn't finish in her time frame, she gave my entire room, complete with all my toys and whatnot, to my sister.

And my dad supported her.

Needless to say, I'm still not on great terms with my dad. The hell that evil woman put me through still taints the relationship, even though they've been divorced for... probably 12 years now.

Jeez, C. I'm sorry. I'm infinitely glad, though, that you've been able to move beyond it and have become a phenomenal person despite the piss poor treatment of your stepmom. Did your father ever apologize for his role in the situation or have you guys just not talked about the situation?

Kinda sorta. He apologized for ever marrying her, which I suppose is better than nothing. Now I just get irked when he makes a comment about my mom, since she's offered me tons more support than he ever could.

I was going to write on this story the second I heard it, but I couldn't put my anger in to words.

It's so, so sad. I ADORE children beyond comprehension; I can't imagine anyone thinking it proper to tie their 13 year old to a tree. It's not even sad. I'm not sure what it is... but it's far more than sad.

Urgh.

What's more, after the first night, they let him go ... but they tied him up the second night because he appeared to be fine after the first.

...

Urgh.

It really is beyond sad. It's truly heartbreaking that they did such a thing to the child. I mean good grief... can you imagine what he went through tied to a tree for eighteen hours?! It's mind boggling that people can be so freaking cruel and think it's acceptable.

I gues this is why they say it takes a community to raise a child. Not to keep the crazy kids inline, but to keep parents from tieing the kiddos to a tree...

I think I have more to say but all my words are getting stuck on my finger tips
