America and the Wall

The United States is building a fence between it an Mexico. Until recently, I was often skeptical of a wall between us and our southern neighbor. I thought, for no reason other than that I had heard this, that it would ineffective. But even more so, I feared a wall would give the U.S. an imperialist, racist, separatist, image. Now, as Time Magazine has admitted, even with a border fence not yet completed, illegal immigration is going down. Which obviously proves that a fence is effective in at least helping to discourage the flow of illegal immigration. And while I do still harbor some ill feelings about the image it will give our country, when I really get down to it, I realize that securing our border should not be anything that we should feel guilty about. WE HAVE EVERY RIGHT TO KNOW WHO COMES IN AND OUT OF OUR COUNTRY!
And it really is that simple. We not only have the right, but we NEED to know who is entering and exiting this nation. And really, this shouldn't be about 22 year old Jose Jimenez from Sonora Mexico, who is crossing the border to work as a dry waller in Southern Arizona. The real problem that comes from an insecure, and porous border like the one that we have today is the criminal element. The drug trade. And heaven forbid, foreign elements that may wish to do the people of this country great harm.
A physical barrier along out southern border is the best, simplest, and would seemingly be one of the most effective ways of controlling the southern border, and there is no reason for us to be insecure about how it may make us look to the rest of the world.

P.S. in a way, illegal immigration brought down the Roman Empire you know.
