Halfway done... how are you doing?

We're not quite halfway through the scholarship contest, but we are at the point of no return. After tomorrow, no one else can enter the competition for the scholarship. And I know that you all are anxiously (or maybe not so anxiously) awaiting this announcement... the point at which we announce the top 25 in the contest.

But first, a few announcements. First of all, please nominate some people to be featured. You can find out more and read about this week's featured blogger here. Remember, you get 100 points for each blogger you nominate who goes on to be featured (so please, don't nominate someone who has already been featured this semester).

Of course, if you try to nominate yourself, we will find out, and you will be removed from the contest. So don't try it. Also, please check your e-mails on the site. A number of e-mails are being sent out to some special individuals, but few are responding. We love to get e-mails back from people, so if you haven't checked your e-mail in a while, go see if you've gotten something from a progressiveu.org address.

Thank you to everyone who has been using the creative writing site (writing.progressiveu.org). We're very happy to see its popularity. If you use the site, please be so kind as to fill out a feedback form for us. Remember, if you've registered here on the main site, your username and password will be the same on the creative writing site. Also, if you participate in a challenge there, do not post your entry as a blog here. It will be deleted, or you will not be considered for the challenge points. And remember to follow the directions carefully. You will not be awarded points should you not follow these instructions.

Now, for the standings. These include the Word Selection bonus points, but do not include bonus points for the 'Think Progress' challenge (since it has not ended yet, and we still have to judge all the entries). Also, read points are not included in the totals used to generate this list, as it's rather difficult to poll the read points, and so we reserve those for the very end of the contest.

For the general record, we will not tell you exactly where you stand in the contest. We will not tell you how many points the leader has. We will not tell you who the leader is. And we will not tell you how many read points you have, because we don't know. So don't ask... any of us.

With that... here's the top 25, in alphabetical order.

Not on the list? Don't worry. Last contest, we saw someone who joined a month late skyrocket up to win a scholarship. Any of these people could easily drop out, providing a spot for someone else to fill. And remember, none of this includes read points, so maybe those will launch you into the list. We also have some pretty bonus points coming up, and those will certainly help you out if you're not doing so well right now.

Just remember... it's still anyone's game.

I nearly just shit in my pants to see my name on here. I've done barely anything this time around, lmao.

Yea... I think the level of effort is much lower this semester. There aren't nearly as many competitive users or decent blogs. (Not that you aren't good... you just kind of fell off the face of the earth lol).

lol, i've noticed that the effort isn't as good. I left because I found really no decent blogs outside of my friends list and still don't see terribly many. I still pin Ediblewoman as the winner, her blogs are a hit

I don't write as much flammatory stuff anymore, but philosophical and scientific things aren't a hit either. People seem to hate to have to think outside of politics and it probably won't stop until after the election.

I will be like a prophet and predict Ediblewoman ftw.

I see a few people that have some nice promise, and most of them are on my buddy list. But I'm with you... I'm a bit sad at the quality in this contest. It's so much more fun when we have some real competition.

Indeed it is. But like I said, I don't think we'll really have any real competition until everyone gets politics out of their system. Hell, even DB doesn't write much anymore, or Percivale, or Mike. I love their philosophical, metaphysical and religious blogs..and their political ones proved interesting and informative as well.

Hopefully, we'll have some soon. I mean I see people who're commenting on my blogs who like the philosophical, religious and other stuff in that category, but when they write as well, they get barely any reads. It's quite depressing, but ProU is like a drug to me, I can't get away from it, lol.

ediblewoman's picture

Is this your way of jinxing me? ;) Oh, wait. If you don't believe in prophecy, you probably don't believe in jinxes either. In that case, thank you! But you and the others who've been here before have an advantage, as you have a lot more blogs to get read points. I think it's anybody's game at this point.

I don't, guess we'll call it a gut feeling then. We have a lot more blogs to get read...that don't get read, lol. There are soo many blogs on here, that is is very hard to get older blogs reads, but hey it means we have to work just as hard as everyone else.

ediblewoman's picture

I can't even remember what I wrote a month ago...I can't really expect anyone else to find it. And six months ago? That'd be even more buried.

I even go back and read my old blogs and they're pretty crappy, lol. Actually my most recent blogs haven't been that well written either, but oh well.

But yeah, I forget what I've written. It's quite sad...now I know how writer's feel.

Do you think Stephen King even remembers Christine? Or Firestarter? Well, he may, since they were made into movies. None of our blogs will ever get made into movies. But still, I wonder if he looks back and thinks "Man, I sucked."

I agree with you 100%. Ediblewoman's blogs are great - they keep the reader's attention and interest consistently. If we were to start placing bets, my money would be on her (if I HAD any money, that is!)

I felt the same way when I saw my name - wait, I think I DID shit my pants! *runs off to change her undies*

Anyway, congratulations to the other 24 on this list! Great work so far ;)

I was wondering if there was any way I could know the number of points that number one on the list has. I don't need to know who number one is, I'd just like to know the number I'm aiming for here. If I can't know that for whatever reason that's fine too.

They have... a lot. But a lot is pretty subjective, since last contest around this time, a lot was like 20K points. It's less than that this contest.

I would honestly rather not know how many points others have. I think too many people would post just for points as opposed to content. I would be willing to bet that blog quality would decrease if we knew how many points the top bloggers have. If the quality decreases and number of blogs increases, the poor staff will be COMPLETELY swamped trying to read everything and eliminate blogs that would not qualify for the scholarship. The lack of a leader board is probably the smartest way to run this type of contest.

Green Underbelly's picture

I guess it would be nice to know, but upon seeing the list I'm sure the top 25 will write much more thinking they have a level chance. This contest is so ubiquitous! Dig.

I'm sure they will. I started writing more before I even knew, but already I am becoming disenchanted with most blogs again, so i might be dropping off again, lol.

Probably, especially since it is alphabetical and not in rank order. I guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens. Good luck to everyone regardless ;)

I got a late start, but I've been trying to go strong for the last couple of weeks. I'm not even in the top 25, but I'm going for third place. I hope no one bows out at this point either. There's so much more to this contest than the money. The blog has got me connected and thinking again. I even reconciled with my mother because of the blog. Again, blogging has more power than the ability to pay for your textbooks.

Don't give up!

Uh-oh, is the scholarship thing closed then? I joined a few hours ago...

ediblewoman's picture

I believe the contest ends June 15th or something like that. If it doesn't turn out to be enough time for this go round, you can use the rest of this contest to build a readership for the next contest. I don't know when that one starts. You'll have to do some digging to find that out.

But anyway, Welcome!

Yeah, you're not eligible for the scholarship if you registered for the site after April 15th. And realistically, even if you were, there's no way you would catch up with the top 3 at this point. Each of them has over 10,000 points, and none of them show signs of stopping.

But, as ediblewoman pointed out, there is absolutely no harm in building a readership now. Very rarely does someone win their first scholarship contest.

Thanks Carrot. I didn't think anyone would nominate me... I got the email that I had been nominated, but I had no clue it was you until I saw this. I guess I'd better turn in the answers to all those featured blogger questions now.

Again, thanks. You deserve your week in the limelight as well soon.
