"Watcha"..."A"

When you don't speak Swahili or a tribal language, commucation with young children in Kenya is difficult. I had the opportunity while in Kenya to work with the children of Compassion International. This program brings children of all ages together one day per week to sing worship songs, learn a Bible story and participate in various types of activities. In a particular town, Ngaamba, there were 257 compassion children, with only 3 adults to supervise or teach them. The children all recieved two meals, breakfast and lunch, and waited patiently for each as older children allowed younger ones to go ahead. They prepared eachother for the meal by washing eachother's hands. These meals may very possibly be all they eat all week as they all come from poor families and the schools do not have meals, yet no child was greedy or whined of hunger as she or he waited. Perhaps the most astounding fact, however, is that out of 257 children, only 150 had a sponsor currently. A sponsor from America or Europe or elsewhere can sponsor a child for a small price and help him or her eat and learn and play and grow. Most sponsors keep their child for a lifetime, and I even met a grown man who visited his sponsor in America once he was older. I personally am looking forward to adopting one of the children from the village I visited, although there are children from allover Africa and any developing nation.

This makes me want to really go out and do something about starvation across the globe. The majority of us Americans are blessed with the best of water supply, food, housing, and even the items that aren't necessary for survival; and yet we constantly complain over the smallest issues.

On the other hand we have young, defenseless, starving, children in Africa who would be grateful for a straw and ribbon! My point is, these people have nothing and instead of waisting time complaining, they seek help. I have actually interviewed people who have came back from donation programs such as this one, and they all have the same response. They all say "They were so grateful."

Some people have even told me how the children cried as they recieved just clean water. Things that we take for granted, they glorify. So please, the next time you here someone complain please bring it to their attention that someone else has it ALOT WORST!
