So something really sad happened on the environmental front here in Oregon today...six sea-lions who where sitting in a cage at the Bonneville Dam waiting to be shipped to Sea World where shot and killed. Now some might say that a quick death is better then a life on display at Sea World; and in some ways, I think those folks might be right. Ideally, the sea lions would never have been taken captive at all; ideally humans wouldn't be blaming the sea lions for our mistakes (see previous post for more details,) but I guess that is why we have a word like "ideal," because our reality is so far from it.
Anyway, the question now is why someone shot the sea lions...was it a disgruntled fisherman who actually believes the sea lions are to blame for the lack of salmon? Was it a crazy environmentalist who believe he or she was doing the sea lions a favor by putting them out of their misery right now? Was it someone trying to draw attention to the whole situation? Was it just some teenager with a gun who wanted to kill something? What was the motive? And will this incident, as the paper claims, stop the whole trapping of the sea lions project for this season? I hope some good comes from this, I hope it does stop the trapping, as least temporarily perhaps. Anyway, speculation will likely get us no where and I've got a world to save....

That is a sad story.

I've seen Planet Earth before....my roommates own the series...but I just watched that little clip from the link you posted and started crying...earth is so beautiful and amazing and knowing that every single day a little more of that beauty gets destroyed and lost chokes me up...I mean, granted I'm PMSing today so I'm a little more emotional then usual...but still...it makes me cry when I think about the beauty being destroyed...
