Community-building bee keeping....

I've been meaning to get to know my neiborhood and neibors better, because I live on a street where everyone seems to be of the "crunchy-granola, treehuggin' hippy" type around here, and while I wouldn't go so far as to label myself as part of that group (I personally see myself as more of a punk rock environmentalist,) you certainly can learn a lot from your tree hugging, crunchy-granola neibors...

Anyway, so I bravely attended a community equinox potluck party tonight with some "natural" brand of oreos in hand, since I don't really cook or bake too much...hoping that store-bought cookies wouldn't be laughed at...and that I wouldn't feel too out of place. Boy am I glad I ventured out! Before I knew it, I was climbing atop a neibors roof to look at her homemade beehives and to examine the combs and the honey the bees had artfully made! And before long, after she'd given a little "lesson" or "lecture" about building hives and maintaining bees, with about ten folks on the roof listening and swilling wine from tin mugs, she invited all of us to help cook and can the honey at a work-party she was hosting! I quickly volunteered to join in the fun!

So I guess my point is, don't ever miss opportunities to meet new folks and share new ideas and climb on to neibors rooves to learn about hives or constilations or whatever your neibors have to share...there is always something interesting to learn maybe a block or two from your house (maybe even closer!) Forget labels...mix with the hippies, the punks, yuppies even...everyone has something interesting to share and teach!

Love ya,

Hmmm... interesting!

is the home-made honey difficult to get from the bees/make?

the wax is hard or difficult, it is just time-consuming. I think bee keeping in general is more time-consuming then difficult. I'll update ya as I learn more.
